Emission Reductions

Vattenfall is pursuing a long-term strategy of improved energy efficiency and responsible environmental practice.

“Vattenfall wishes to take the lead on the climate issue and today we will set a new long-term target. Vattenfall intends to cut emissions by half by 2030 compared to the base year 1990, while maintaining or even increasing energy production levels. We have already achieved a reduction of 30% since 1990, and our goal will thus be to cut emissions by a further 20% by 2030.” “Vattenfall’s long-term goal means that emissions must decrease on average by 1 million tons per year up to 2030 which is equivalent to the emissions of about 400 000 cars every year. We will on a yearly basis report on the progress of our reductions of CO2 emissions, measured in grams/kWh, so that our surroundings can follow our journey towards our goal. By 2030 we shall have halved our emissions compared with 1990. We use 1990 as our base year because it is the year that the Kyoto-protocol and the EU use as the starting point for their targets.” Lars G. Josefssons, CEO

EU policies on emissions trading and renewables

In the future, energy generation will be greatly affected by policy measures taken to restrict the greenhouse effect. These policies include the European Union emissions trading scheme, and the targets set for renewable energy sources.

Vattenfall works actively with the emissions trading system and has a special task force for advanced participation in the system
