Targets for renewables
The EU has set a target for the increased use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES).
12% of our energy consumption should be supplied from renewable energy sources by 2010 (up from 6% in 1997). Electricity generation has a renewable target (RES-Electricity) of 22.1% by 2010 (up from 13.9% in 1997).

Currently, the EU is discussing revised renewable targets for 2020. The commision has proposed that the overall use of renewable energy should be increased to 20% in 2020. However, a binding agreement on new target levels could be reached in 2009, at the earliest, when the European parliament and council of ministers have finished discussions.
