Increase our use of energy sources with low CO2 emissions

Vattenfall is a leading generator of energy from renewable sources such as wind power, hydropower and biomass fuels.

Today, renewable energy sources represent about 22 per cent of the company’s electricity generation and 12 per cent of our heat generation. Our ambition is to increase this share significantly in the near future.

Lillgrund, Sweden’s largest wind farm

The wind turbines at Lillgrund, built during 2006 and 2007 off the south coast of Sweden, are spinning and generating electricity. The farm is comprised of 48 wind turbines. Together, they can supply electricity for 60,000 households. Lillgrund is the third largest wind power farm in the world. We have conducted extensive environmental studies and most signs indicate that the effects on fauna and flora will be very marginal.

Other energy sources with low CO2 emissions

We are continously upgrading and improving the environmental performance of plants that already emmit low amounts of CO2, by increasing capacity from excisting nuclear and hydro power plants. We are also investing in our biomass fired power plants to make sure we can extract as much energy as possible from the sources used. In some cases, we convert fossil fuelled units to biomass combustion.
