Combat Climate Change – a competition for school students

For the second consecutive year, Vattenfall and National Geographic arrange the Combat Climate Change competition for school students. The task is both difficult and important; to come up with ideas for a sustainable solution for combating climate change.

The competition is aimed at students between the ages of 14 and 19. This years edition of the Combat Climate Change competition runs February 11th – May 15th. Information and rules are available at the web site. (Links to the right)

Winners go on rainforest expedition

The winners and their supervising teacher will win a place on an Earthwatch volunteer expedition to Puerto Rico to work alongside leading scientists. The winners will be testing a new way to regenerate rainforests that could provide local income while protecting rainforest biodiversity. Runners up will win state-of the art camera phones and National Geographic guides to camera phone photography.

Finnish students won the Combat Climate Change competition 2007

In 2007 Heta-Elena Heiskanen and Salla-Riina Hokkanen from Mikkeli, Finland won the first prize. In competition with four thousand other students, their concept to create a global alliance for future energy solutions made them the overall winners . King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, presented the award at the House of Sweden in Washington, DC on November 9, 2007.

Cooperation between Vattenfall and National Geographic

We wish to increase knowledge and understanding of the impact of global climate change, both among our co-workers and among opinion leaders, teachers and students. The National Geographic Society is the world´s largest non-profit scientific and educational membership organisation. It is committed to expanding the undestanding and awareness of all aspects of sustainable growth for mankind, in harmony with environmental concerns. Our partnership with National Geographic is part of our Group-wide effort to spread knowledge about and create engagement in climate change. The cooperation between Vattenfall and National Geographic has two main elements – a pan-European school competition and a multi-media partnership.
