Pamilo hydro power plant
With an output of 84 MW, Pamilo is Vattenfall´s largest hydro power plant in Finland.
Pamilo draws its power from Lake Koitere and the Lower-Koita River, which originates in Russia and flows into the Gulf of Finland. This area is recognised as one of the most beautiful in Finland. Located deep in forest wilderness, the actual power plant is underground. The control building, designed by Finland’s most famous architect, Alvar Aalto, is the only visible building.
Limited possibilities for hydro power
Finland’s mountains are relatively low, limiting the production of hydro power.
16 percent of Finland’s electricity is produced by hydro power.
Recognised power potential
Although the power potential of Lake Koitere and the Lower-Koita River was noted as early as 1908, construction of a hydro power plant didn’t start until 1952.
