Main advantages
- Renewable
- The possibility to combine production of electricity and heat
Main disadvantages
- Requires heavy transport from forests and the paper industry, which impacts on climate
- Has higher investment costs than fossil fuel plants. Biofuel investment is not as high as nuclear, hydro and wind, but is still considerable
- Has high operating costs
- Requires good cleaning equipment to avoid local and regional emissions of pollutants
Did you know?
Vattenfall is one of the world’s biggest purchasers and users of biofuel. In Sweden, 55% of the company’s heat production is based on biofuel (wood, crops, waste), and more than 500 people are employed, full or part-time, in this area.
