Schwarze Pumpe lignite power plant
Located in Brandenburg, this double-block lignite power plant sets a new international benchmark for environmental protection.
The Schwarze Pumpe power plant converts raw lignite from the Welzow-Süd open-cast mine into electric energy. When operating at full capacity, it uses 36,000 tonnes of lignite daily. One KWh of electricity can be generated from a kilogram of lignite.
Slashing emissions
Like other fossil fuels, lignite generates flue gas. The Schwarze Pumpe power plant uses a combination of highly effective measures (such as low-nitric-oxide combustion, flue-gas de-dusting and flue-gas desulphurisation) to keep the plant operating comfortably within legal limits, whatever the operating state.
