Electricity distribution in Finland
In Finland, Vattenfall is moving towards a modern distribution network in rural areas.
The Group R&D programme, Intelligent Networks, is developing better availability and environmental performance, combined with good economics.
Improved network planning tools
Building a new network with higher availability requires new planning tools. A major part of the R&D work involves linking the quality of service delivered to the customer to the traditional network parameters (overall system outage time, overall system outage frequencies) that are required by regulators.
Compact substations
Improving the availability of power to the customer often requires new construction projects, even when there are not enough sites to build on. Compact solutions solve this problem. By fitting a compact primary substation (130/20 kV) under an existing network overhead line, the new construction has a minimal impact on the environment and delivers low-cost operation and maintenance. The use of the substation will significantly improve the availability in the network.
Automatic meter reading
In order to improve customer service levels, Vattenfall moved into automatic meter reading systems early. The customer is invoiced for exactly the amount of electricity that has been used, instead of a forecasted figure. The more detailed consumption information now available can also be used for other network purposes.
