Remote reading of electricity meters in Finland
Vattenfall has collaborated with TeliaSonera to develop a system for collecting real-time consumption data.
The new system, based on the mobile phone network, allows us to bill actual consumption instead of estimated consumption.
Satisfied customers
Vattenfall’s side of the project has been led by Aarne Sievi. “Pilot installations of electricity meters have already been done. In May 2005, we will begin to install remote readers for all of Vattenfall’s 360,000 network customers in Finland,” he says. And so far, reaction has been extremely positive. Aarne explains, “Customers have contacted us to see if the system is already available. They have also given us many new ideas regarding additional services to add to the system.”
Measuring consumer consumption in real time
It isn’t only Vattenfall’s customers that benefit. Vattenfall’s operations will also gain more refined tools. “We will have more exact information about electricity network performance, such as transmission losses,” says Aarne. “This will make it easier to develop and maintain the electricity networks, and improve network efficiency.”
More improvements
The installation of automatic meter reading – or AMR – started in Sweden in 2003. Vattenfall expects all their Swedish electricity meters, numbering 900,000, to support remote reading by 2009. Further customer service improvements include clearer and more comprehensible bills, and products that enable us to meet individual requests from our customers regarding prices and billing.
