Swedish-Polish HVDC Link

Hydropower normally accounts for 60 per cent of the electricity supply in the Nordic countries. Poland’s electricity supply is almost entirely based on coal-fired power stations.

Linking the two power systems together with 250 km of cable means that the use of resources in both countries will be more efficient. Hydropower from Sweden will be exported to Poland in years with high rainfall and import of coal power from Poland to Sweden in years with low rainfall. Also, the difference between the two countries’ electricity consumption during the day can be evened out.
