How to move a whole town
Vattenfall Power Consultant take an active interest in a new power supply project
The town of Kiruna, situated in the north part of Sweden, was once built when rich iron ore deposits were found here. Today the mine is expanding under the town and it has to be moved, beginning with the infrastructure.
A power distribution plant supplying the railway and large parts of the town are already near to the deformation zone, according to Mr. Bo Persson of Business Area Power Networks.
The project includes:
- The construction of two new 130 kV transformer stations
- The re-construction of an existing 40 kV station
- New constructions and re-constructions of the 140-130 kV power networks in and around Kiruna
“The two new transformer stations are rather interesting. They have air-insulated high tension distribution plants with all equipment indoor. They are actually the first of this type to be built so far north,” Mr. Persson adds. The fact that the existing power infrastructure must function together with the new one, is of course a challenge. When the town has been moved the mine can be in operation for a very long time.
