Ignalina shut down increases safety around the Baltic

After years of discussion, Unit 1 at the Ignalia nuclear power plant in Lithuania is to be decommissioned and dismantled.

Vattenfall Power Consultant is one of the partners in a consortium appointed to project manage the process. About ten experts will be involved in this project, working on-site at Ignalina and from their Swedish offices. Our assignment comprises three main areas:

  • modernisation of waste handling and storage for solid waste
  • replacement of heat and steam plant
  • modernisation of the technical documentation archives

A powerful combination

The consortium comprises:

  • National Nuclear Corporation, Ltd. (NCC), the UK
  • Belgatom (Tractabel), Belgium
  • Vattenfall Power Consultant (supported by Steag, Germany)

The entire project is being financed through a special decommissioning fund administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development EBRD.

Leak detection at Ignalina

The RBMK-1500 plant is the same construction as the Chernobyl reactors (without the reactor containment found in Western nuclear facilities). To improve safety, Vattenfall Power Consultant is installing a leak detection system. When this equipment is operational at Ignalina, it will meet the "Leak Before Break" requirements, meaning that critical piping in the plant will be monitored by at least three independent systems. This part of the project is financed by the Swedish International Project Authority Nuclear Safety, SIP.
