Expanding skills and revenues in Zambia

Vattenfall Power Consultant will provide a comprehensive capacity increasing programme for Zesco staff.

Zesco, Zambia’s national power utility, has a total of 250,000 customers and 3,000 employees. It sells 8 TWh of electricity annually, half of which is used by the copper mining industry.

Improving performance

Concentrating on four areas: customer service, power distribution, management and commercialisation, the project will transform Zesco into an economically viable company and improve customer focus. The programme will enhance corporate leadership, technical performance, and pricing and billing, resulting in more efficient operations and more satisfied customers.

Comprehensive programme

Project manager Lars-Erik Larsson has already worked for Zesco for five years, completing a tariff study and advising in large-scale power sales agreements. "Initial planning is for a two-year training programme, involving about five hundred Zesco employees in various sub-programmes, and as many of our own staff as required," he says. This project, which is co-financed by Zesco and Sida, also includes twinning-arrangements with Zesco staff visiting Swedish power utilities.

Large scope

Zesco is a public company with three major hydro power plants, one of which utilises the large reservoir of Lake Kariba. Zesco also exports electric energy to Zimbabwe and the Congo.
