Increased dam safety at Ajaure Power Station
At 46 metres high, the Ajuare Power Station is one of Vattenfall’s largest dams.
If the rock-fill embankment dam failed, a devastating flood wave would hit down-stream facilities. Following an extended evaluation study, Vattenfall Power Consultant implemented a number of measures to improve dam safety.
New methods
The measures included raising the dam crest by 3 metres, and using a geo-membrane (1.5 mm thick polypropene) to raise the impervious core – this new method has only been used at a few dams around the world.
