Vattenfall's project on CCS

Climate change is one of the largest environmental challenges of our time. As part of ongoing research and development efforts, Vattenfall is working towards the goal of introducing commercial concepts for carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) at power plants between 2015 and 2020.

To avoid the damaging effects of climate change we need to significantly reduce the amounts of carbon dioxide emitted over the next century. Whilst alternative sources of energy are being developed emissions from fossil fuels must be reduced. CO2 capture and storage can support the transition to a low CO2 energy system in the near future.

On May 29, 2006, we broke ground for the construction of a pilot plant with carbon capture and storage at coal fired electricity generation. The 30 MW pilot plant will give us the opportunity to explore technology previously only tested in the laboratory.
