At BTU in Cottbus, south of Berlin, Germany, research on the Oxyfuel process is conducted. The test facility, a 500 kW combustion test rig for run-of-mine lignite is situated at Vattenfall’s power plant Jänschwalde. BTU is also making research and development on the field of lignite drying.
The BTU test rig was officially inaugurated in April 2007. The rig is fired with dried, pulverised lignite and is equipped with flue gas recirculation for Oxyfuel combustion mode. After the combustion chamber particles are removed from the flue gases and in a flue gas condenser water and sulphur can be removed from the CO2-rich product. BTU is also making research and development on the field of lignite drying.
