The forestry sector
Within the forestry sector, gross tropical deforestation currently causes about 8.2 Gt CO2e emissions per year. In temperate regions, gross forestation currently absorbs about 2.7 Gt CO2e per year. The net emissions are then about 5.5 Gt CO2e per year, or 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By 2030 gradual reductions in deforestation combined with roughly constant forestation are expected to reduce net forestry emissions to 3.7 Gt CO2e per year. Beyond BAU improvements, the potential 2030 abatement from reducing deforestation is ~3.3 GtCO2e/year based on maximum realistic realization rates of 75% for Latin America, 50% for Africa (low administrative capability) and 25% in Asia (high opportunity cost for timber). Forestation could yield additional sequestration of ~3.5 GtCO2e/year by 2030, with over 90% of this potential occurring on unused degraded forestry lands in South America and Africa.
