The agriculture & waste sector
The agriculture and waste sector currently emits about 7.2 Gt CO2e per year, or about 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The emissions N2O from soil fertilization (30%) and other sources (8%), and CH4 from livestock (29%), landfills/wastewater (18%), rice (9%) and other sources (6%).
Business-as-usual projections show an emissions growth of 37% until 2030, primarily driven by population growth in the developing world. The maximum theoretical abatement potential below 40 €/tonne is estimated to be about 5.7 Gt CO2e/year in 2030, but realization of this potential is very challenging for a number of reasons. The practical abatement potential is thus much lower and is estimated to be about 1.5 Gt CO2e/year in 2040.
