The greenhouse gas emissions from the agriculture and wastewater sectors were 7.2 GtCO2e/year in 2002, or 18% of the total emissions. These emissions consist of 30 % of N2O from soil fertilisation, 29% of CH4 from livestock, 18% of CH4 from landfills and wastewater, 9% CH4 from rice production and 14% from other sources.
Geographically, China was the largest single source with 17% of emissions, while North America, together with Europe OECD, came in second with 10%. Transition economies accounted for 5% and Other industrials for 6%, while the region “Rest of the world” accounted for 51% of the total emissions. Emissions by end-use in 2002 were largely derived from three areas: Industrial non-CO2 26%, Livestock 23% and Soils 22%.
In the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, the emissions from the sector will grow with 37% to 9.9 Gt CO2e/year in 2030. The growth is primarily driven by population growth in the developing countries, as well as a shift in consumption patterns (more meat will be eaten) and an increase in the waste production per capita.
