The industry sector
The direct and indirect emissions from the industry sector represent 1/3 of global greenhouse gas emissions or 13 Gt CO2e. The most important sub-sectors are cement and steel which both account for about 12% each of this. Business-as-usual emission growth is estimated to be 60% from 2002 to 2030, thus reaching total emissions of 22 Gt CO2e in 2030. This is in spite of a strong natural CO2 efficiency improvement due to increased energy efficiency. Abatement opportunities vary across industries. The total abatement potential is estimated to 6 Gt CO2e in 2030, thus limiting emissions to 16 Gt CO2e in 2030. Important abatement areas include increased use of electric motor-drive system, feedstock substitution, CO2 capture and storage and co-generation. The feasibility of achieving the abatement is assessed to be high relative to many other sectors.
