Emissions in the industry sector, business-as-usual

The industry sector currently (2002) has annual greenhouse gas emissions of 13 Gt CO2e, corresponding to 1/3 of the global greenhouse gas emissions counting both direct and indirect emissions. Not counting the indirect emissions coming from e.g. generation of electricity used within the industrial sector, the emissions are 9 Gt CO2e or about 22% of total emissions. The industry sector consists of a wide range of sub-sectors. When it comes to emissions, two of them - cement and steel - are the main drivers. Both the cement and the steel sector have emissions of about 1.6 Gt CO2e. In a business-as-usual scenario, the emissions from the industry sector are projected to grow with 60% from 2002 to 2030, resulting in emissions of 22 Gt CO2e in 2030 (15 Gt CO2e in direct emissions). The increase occurs in spite of a significant reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity in the sector, which is linked to improvements in energy efficiency.
