Method

The general approach of this study has been to identify the most important abatement possibilities within different sectors. Through a thorough analysis of these different possibilities, including the potential for technological development and cost reductions through learning and experience, the total abatement potential and costs within each sector and region has been modelled. We have worked with six different sectors, six different regions and three time periods. The six sectors are power, industry, transport, buildings, forestry, and agriculture & waste. The six regions are similar to those often used by the International Energy Agency (IEA), although some changes have been made. The regions are North America (USA and Canada), Europe OECD, Transition economies, Other industrials, China, and Rest of the World. A detailed account of which countries that belongs to the different regions can be found in the section about each region. The three time periods are up to 2010, from 2010-2020 and from 2020-2030. For the purposes of this mapping, we focus on the results for 2030. For each of these time periods a business-as-usual emissions scenario has been constructed and the major abatement opportunities, including its costs and volumes, have been identified. In addition, marginal cost curves have been calculated. Further details on the approach for each sector are described separately for each sector. Upon completion of the first mapping, the approach and its results has been reviewed and approved by a number of leading academics worldwide.
