Purpose
The purpose of this work has been to present a first attempt at a mapping of the global potential and opportunities for reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases, using an integrated approach. To our knowledge, this is the first presentation of a global bottom-up investigation of abatement opportunities. The aim has not been to present the final and definitive answer. On the contrary, what is now presented is more to be considered like an equivalent of a 16th century map of the world – a map that will gradually be adjusted and improved as more data and details are added. The very nature of this attempt at mapping the global abatement potential indeed implies some limitations as to how the results can be interpreted.
- Definition/refinement of an integrated perspective on abatement potential and opportunities given at target CO2 concentration level.
- Order of magnitude evaluation and prioritisation of abatement measures.
- Providing a fact base to support the assessment of possible regulatory arrangements.
The results can however not be used for:
- In depth valuation of specific abatement opportunities in terms of potential and cost
- Analysis of specific sectors and/or countries by direct scaling
- Definition of target CO2 concentration levels.
