Stefanie Lemke
"At Vattenfall, there is an incredible lot of different fields of activity, allowing me to gain many valuable insights into absolutely different topics during my day-to-day work" says Stefanie Lemke, who works at the Environmental Protection and Licences Department in Germany.
Please describe in short what you are working with
I work in the Department for Environmental Protection and Licences and have, among other things, responsibility for managing CO2 emissions trading for the power plants of Vattenfall Europe Generation AG. A major project we are currently carrying out is the approval procedure for the CCS demonstration project in Jänschwalde.
What makes you most enthusiastic about working for Vattenfall?
With this CCS demonstration project, Vattenfall wants to show that electricity generation on the basis of lignite and including CO2 capture, CO2 transport and underground storage works on an industrial scale. I'm right in the midst of this project, and there is hardly any other job task I could imagine to be more exciting.
How would you describe your typical day at work?
There is actually no truly typical work day, as the current happenings of each day usually bring urgent job tasks which want to be done although they were not foreseeable earlier in the day.
If it is not for a visit to the scene, for example to power plants, or participation in various activities connected with our company’s membership in industry associations or other external appointments, a day in the office usually begins with checking the inbox. This being done, the job tasks will be dealt with according to priority.
What do you enjoy most in your work?
At Vattenfall, there are an incredible lot of different fields of activity, allowing me to gain many valuable insights into absolutely different themes during my day-to-day work. The colleagues in my department, for example, work in the fields of ambient pollution protection, water pollution control, waste management, noise pollution control, environmental management and licence management - and this, in each case, both for the mining and the power plant operations.
The spectrum of my duties ranges from technical and engineering activities via controlling jobs, internal reporting and reporting to authorities to collaboration in cross-company working parties. It is hardly possible to have a more multi-faceted job, and this is what I like.
What do you think is the benefit of working at Vattenfall?
There is a multitude of people working at Vattenfall who have crucially influenced how the energy sector in Lusatia has developed, be it in the power plant or mining operations. To benefit from their extraordinary wealth of experience is a great benefit to me, a benefit Vattenfall is offering to a greater extent than other companies.
