Energy and resource efficiency

The EU’s target is to improve the efficiency of energy use in society with 20 percent by 2020. Energy efficiency is one of the most important environmental aspects for Vattenfall.

Improved efficiency in power plants and distribution grids means that society’s need for energy will be met while using less resources and causing less environmental impact per generated unit of energy.

We continuously invest in modern technology, improved safety and better environmental performance in our power plants. When older plants are replaced with newer ones, a higher efficiency is achieved. Increased efficiency can also to some extent be achieved by upgrading components in existing plants.

Transmission and distribution grids ensure that electricity is available all the time and everywhere. There is still some potential to lower the losses from transmission and distribution by using more efficient equipment and this is employed in new and reinvestments. New technology is also installed to enable better supervision of the electricity network and to help locate problems more exactly.

Vattenfall actively supports industrial and retail customers in energy efficiency improvements. This includes giving customer advice, consulting services to industry and promoting energy saving incentives etcetera. In addition, Vattenfall supports research and development of future energy saving products, possible future energy sources and programmes within R&D to promote further energy savings in society.
