Horns Rev offshore wind farm

Horns Rev

Horns Rev 1 is one of the world’s biggest offshore wind farms, it is located off the west coast of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula, close to Blåvands Huk in the North Sea. With 80 wind turbines and a total capacity of 160 MW, Horns Rev was installed by Elsam in 2002. Today, Vattenfall owns 60 per cent of the facility, with DONG Energy owning 40 per cent.

Horns Rev can generate enough electricity for 150,000 private homes, or nearly two per cent of Denmark’s total electricity consumption. The Horns Rev wind farm cost DKK 2 billion to erect.

The North Sea winds are often very strong, which is why offshore wind turbines produce 150 per cent more electricity than landbased turbines.

As one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms, Horns Rev has attracted the attention of government officials, the media, the construction industry, tourists and many others – both in Denmark and abroad. The 80 gigantic wind turbines rising from the sea are an impressive sight, but because they are so far out at sea, they cannot be seen clearly from the shore.

Lower CO2 emissions

Wind power contributes significantly to efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. That is why Vattenfall wants to take the lead in expanding the use of wind power. The Danish government would like to see the country’s offshore wind turbines producing about 4,000 MW of electricity by the year 2030. In Sweden, the government hopes to increase wind power capacity significantly over the next 10–15 years.
