We supply smart grids for sustainable cities
Local energy production such as wind power, geo-heat and solar, and ways to control and save energy, are cornerstones of a sustainable city. In order to make this work you need intelligent, flexible and reliable distribution networks. We partner up with suppliers, planners and developers to help build tomorrow’s sustainable cities.
Today’s electric grids were originally planned and built primarily for centralised, largescale electricity generation and distribution. Demands on flexibility of electric grids have increased. This fact, along with a number of other development trends surrounding energy use and energy policies – has resulted in the development of smart grid technology. Vattenfall is conducting several smart grid technology R&D projects aimed at ensuring secure and reliable network services. We do this in partnerships, primarily focusing on smart grids and energy storage. One example is a large demonstration project involving smart grids on the Swedish island of Gotland.
