Cooperation project on fast charging

Vattenfall takes part in a Swedish, nation-wide cooperation to investigate fast charging infrastructure.

Elforsk (a Swedish industry- and state-owned research company for the electricity industry) is the joining force for a pre-study which will propose a national coordination of demo projects concerning fast charging of electric vehicles. A large part of the Swedish energy utilities and grid owners take part in the project, as well as power technology companies, and the testing and demonstration company Test Site Sweden.

The project is described in an application at the Swedish Energy Agency from May this year. The pre-study will provide a general description of charging system shaping, demo scenes, vehicle fleets and applications. Furthermore it describes a coordinated fast charging project in the cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo and on the Green Highway in the north of Sweden. The aim is to coordinate demonstration projects in fast charging of electric vehicles in order to make them more visible, both nationally and internationally.

Lennart Spante, who is the coordinator from Vattenfall R&D Projects, says: “There is an expected demand for fast charging of electric vehicles in the future. The so-called “Range Anxiety” that many people feel has to be taken seriously. Even though we see at-home charging as the main choice for consumers during the coming years, it needs to be supplemented with faster charging technologies. We believe that this Elforsk cooperation is an important step to make fast charging more widely available in Sweden.”
