CO2 capture pilot at Buggenum
Through Nuon, Vattenfall is setting up a CCS pilot situated in Willem Alexander power plant at Buggenum in the Dutch province of Limburg.
The Willem Alexander power plant, with a net production capacity of 253 MW, was originally designed for coal combustion, but currently also biomass is being cofired. Through this pilot Nuon aims to make the pre-combustion CO2-capture technology suitable for the energy sector and to optimise the process. The knowledge and experience gained focus on ensuring an efficient CO2 removal process, by testing various conditions and solvents and mastering the operation of the CO2 removal unit. The pilot has been in operation since February 2011.
The test scheme contains a complete Research & Development programme for monitoring and optimising the process of CO2 capture. The R&D programme is divided into several sections like plant operation, plant optimisation, CO2 absorption, corrosion etc. Nuon is in this project working together with leading parties such as ECN, KEMA TNO and Delft University of Technology.
With this pilot Vattenfall is building up knowledge and experience of CO2 capture.
