Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

Climate change resulting from emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases is one of the greatest environmen-tal challenges of our time.

The idea with CCS is to capture CO2 from coal-fired power plants, compress it to a liquid and permanently store it deep underground. Suitable storage sites are natural rock formations more than a thousand metres below the surface, which are similar to natural oil and gas reservoirs.

Our CCS project includes major research and development to develop technologies for capture and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) from coal-fired power plants. In September 2008, we commissioned the world’s first Oxyfuel pilot plant for CCS. The Oxyfuel technology eliminates nitrogen from the flue gas by combusting the fuel in a mixture of oxygen and recycled flue gases.
