BMW launches two new electric concepts

Last month, BMW launched two new electric car concepts: the i3 fully electric and the i8 plug-in hybrid. BMW claims that a large part of the material used to build these cars is recycled, but they won’t tell us how much. The over-all weight is reduced, compared to conventional cars, since both the chassis and drive-train are made mostly of aluminium.

The i3 is a 4-seated city car. The output from the electric motor is 170 hp, with a peak torque of 250 Nm. The range is 120-160 kilometres, but a petrol-powered range extender is also offered as an option.

The i8 is a 4-seated sports car. The output from the electric motor and the combustion engine put together is 350 hp. Whether the combustion engine is run on diesel or petrol, we have to wait to find out for sure, but the ratio between power output and torque (220 hp / 300 Nm) suggests a petrol engine. The electric range will be up to 35 kilometres.

We still have to wait and see when these cars will be massproduced and how big the price tag will be.
