Biomass

As one of Vattenfall’s initiatives to replace coal in the power plants, Vattenfall’s Group-wide Biomass Programme addresses the issue of increasing the use of biomass fuels in the Vattenfall generation system.

We have about 30 biomass-fired heat and combined heat and power (CHP) plants, and are one of the world’s largest buyers and users of biomass energy. The purpose of the Biomass Programme is to contribute to further reducing Vattenfall’s carbon dioxide emissions by identifying how we can significantly increase the use of renewable fuels in our fuel mix. Vattenfall plans to replace large quantities of coal with renewable fuels.

Biomass energy - today and in the future

Vattenfall has been involved in research on renewables for over 30 years, through which we have gained substantial, specialised knowledge.

Today, our R&D efforts aim to achieve large-scale biomass utilisation over the long-term. Studies are directed towards finding relevant new fuels, new refining and conversion technologies, logistic chains, and partnership. Vattenfall is already able to use or increase the use of biomass fuels in several existing coal-fired plants.

In the longer term, we will consider possibilities for converting additional coal-fired plants to biomass combustion, or for building new biomass plants, to help us move towards significantly increased volumes of biomass fuels.
