Biomass and waste

Vattenfall is one of the world’s biggest purchasers and users of biomass fuel.

In Sweden, 55% of the company’s heat production is based on biomass (wood, crops, waste), and more than 500 people are employed, full or part-time, in this area.

Main advantages

  • Renewable
  • The possibility to combine production of electricity and heat

Main disadvantages

  • Requires heavy transport from forests and the paper industry, which impacts on climate
  • Has higher investment costs than fossil fuel plants. Biomass investment is not as high as nuclear, hydro and wind, but is still considerable
  • Has high operating costs
  • Requires good cleaning equipment to avoid local and regional emissions of pollutants
