Nuclear power plant Ringhals

About Ringhals

Ringhals produces 20 per cent of all the electricity used in Sweden.

The nuclear power plant is one of the few in the world to have both boiling water and pressurised water reactors. The reactors were commissioned between 1975 and 1983.

Ringhals’ four reactors produce around 28 TWh in a normal year – sufficient to supply six cities the size of Gothenburg with electricity. The total power output is approximately 3690 MW.

A major industry

Ringhals is a major industry. The running of the facilities is an important part of the operation. However, a considerable amount of research and development is also conducted here. Many of our engineers are specialists, and among the foremost in their field in the world.

Ringhals AB has around 1,500 employees and an annual turnover of just over SEK 5 billion.

Barsebäck Kraft AB is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ringhals AB, which in turn is owned by Vattenfall (70.4%) and E.ON (29.6%).

Investment for the future

It is more than thirty years since the first kilowatt-hour of electricity was produced at Ringhals. With the modernisation work that is currently under way, we will be able to run our facilities for many years to come.

In the period up until 2012, SEK 13 billion is being invested in regeneration, improved safety, reduced environmental impact and increased output. This will enable us to produce more electricity and meet our own and the outside world’s stringent demands for safety, accessibility and environment. A further SEK 12 billion will be invested after 2012.

Generation shift

Ringhals is currently facing a generation shift and is recruiting a large number of new employees every year. We are investing considerable resources in transferring expertise and experience to the generation that will be taking over the operation and maintenance of Ringhals.
