A record-breaking journey through Sweden
For the first time, an all-electric car has been driven all the way through Sweden; from Ystad in the south to Haparanda in the north. The project is called “Elbilsrekordet” (the Electric Car Record) and reached its goal on 1 July 2011.
The aim of the trip was to show that electric cars are available, here and now, and that they can cover the transportation needs of most people. The Electric Car Record was initiated by Gröna Bilister (the Swedish Association of Green Motorists), a non-profit organisation with focus on cars and sustainability.
On the 20-day journey, seven people took turns driving a Citroen C-Zero, which has an electric range of up to 130 kilometres. The car is already available for purchase in Sweden.
Mattias Goldmann, one of the drivers and project initiators says: “"All in all, we drove 4500 km without any exhaust emissions and with zero problems - I don't think it has ever been this easy to establish a record! We visited over 40 municipalities and discussing with them how to speed up the change to electric vehicles. With the political will, we can be one of the best branched countries in the world, not least because we already plug in our petrol cars to heat up the engines in the winter."
